At REACH BACK, we believe sustainable development challenges are interconnected and cannot be effectively addressed in isolation. A child’s ability to learn is influenced not only by access to a classroom but also by safety, water and sanitation, health, protection, environmental conditions, practical skills, leadership opportunities and the strength of the surrounding community.

For this reason, we use an integrated, locally led and school-centred approach that places children and young people at the heart of sustainable development while engaging schools, families, communities and local institutions as partners in creating lasting change.

1. We Start with the Learning Environment

Schools and Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS) are more than places for academic instruction. They are important platforms for protection, health, environmental action, leadership development, skills building and community engagement.

We therefore work to strengthen the whole learning environment, making it safer, healthier, greener, more inclusive and more empowering for every learner.

2. We Integrate Our Programmes

Rather than implementing disconnected interventions, REACH BACK designs programmes that reinforce one another:

EQUAL — Education Quality & Universal Access to Learning strengthens access to inclusive quality education, learning resources, digital inclusion and support for vulnerable and crisis-affected learners.

WATWA — Water Trucking and WASH Access improves access to water, sanitation and hygiene services that contribute to healthier and more dignified learning environments.

ROGS — ROTO Green Schools promotes school greening, tree planting, waste management, environmental education and student-led environmental stewardship.

OSFARM — Organic School Farms transforms school gardens into practical learning spaces for sustainable agriculture, soil stewardship, composting, food production and environmental learning.

EDAS — End Drug Abuse in Schools strengthens prevention, awareness, life skills and healthy decision-making among children and young people.

GRACIH — Grassroots Civic Hub develops responsible citizenship and democratic leadership by giving learners practical experience in elections, representation, servant leadership, good governance, conflict resolution and project management.

SKIBEC — Skills Beyond the Classroom connects young people to practical vocational, entrepreneurial and employability skills that can strengthen their pathways toward economic independence.

CREATS and SCHOOL CUP use culture, creativity, sports and extracurricular participation to promote talent development, teamwork, inclusion, confidence and positive youth engagement.

Together, these programmes allow REACH BACK to respond to the whole child and the whole learning environment rather than addressing individual challenges separately.

3. We Put Local Communities at the Centre

We believe that sustainable work is locally led.

REACH BACK works alongside school administrations, teachers, pupils and students, parents, traditional authorities, quarter heads, youth leaders, religious leaders, community members, government institutions and other local stakeholders.

Communities are not simply beneficiaries of our work. They are partners in identifying challenges, mobilizing participation, implementing solutions and sustaining results.

This approach strengthens local ownership and helps ensure that interventions remain relevant to the realities of the people and communities they are designed to serve.

4. We Move from Awareness to Practical Action

Our approach emphasizes learning by doing.

Environmental education is connected to planting and caring for trees, managing waste and cultivating school gardens.

Civic education is connected to elections, representation and student leadership.

WASH education is reinforced through practical access to water, storage, filtration, sanitation and hygiene practices.

Skills development is connected to hands-on vocational and digital training.

In this way, children and young people do not simply learn about change — they participate in creating it.

5. We Build Local Capacity

REACH BACK invests in the capacity of children, young people, teachers, facilitators, student leaders and community actors so that knowledge and skills remain within the communities where we work.

Through training, mentoring, practical experience and peer-to-peer learning, we seek to create a multiplier effect in which empowered individuals can reach back and empower others.

This is the foundation of our Reach One Teach One philosophy.

6. We Prioritize Inclusion, Protection and Safeguarding

Children and young people must be able to participate in our programmes in environments that respect their dignity, safety, rights and individual differences.

Protection and safeguarding are therefore integrated across our interventions, with particular attention to vulnerable and crisis-affected children and young people.

We promote responsible conduct, child protection, Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), psychosocial well-being, inclusion and the principle of Do No Harm throughout our work.

7. We Connect Grassroots Action to Sustainable Development

Our programmes begin with local realities but contribute to wider development priorities.

By improving education, WASH, child protection, environmental stewardship, sustainable agriculture, youth skills and civic participation, REACH BACK contributes to building more resilient, inclusive and sustainable schools and communities.

We align our work with relevant national development priorities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to poverty reduction, education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, decent work, reduced inequalities, responsible consumption, climate action, life on land, and peaceful and inclusive institutions.

From Grassroots Challenges to Sustainable Solutions

Our approach can be summarized in three actions:
